Lake in Loja surrounded by green jungle trees as the sun sets

Our commitment to recycled silver and gold.

We believe the concept of ‘fine jewelry’ extends far beyond our pieces into every area of our business.

Oceana Jewelry is a local, family run business located in Galapagos Islands, Ecuador. We value sustainability and positive environmental practice. All our pieces are made from 100% recycled silver and gold sourced from the USA. Recycled silver and gold does not suffer any loss in purity, so we believe creating beautiful jewelry with a low environmental impact is the way.

Environmental impact of mining.

Mining of precious metals has a devastating effect on the environment. Regions surrounding open pit mines suffer from deforestation, severe soil erosion, water pollution and critical loss of ecosystems.

Illegal gold and mineral mining in Ecuador has developed quickly over the past few years. A robust, illicit infrastructure exists with a close connection to organised crime. Ecuadorian criminal bands, as well as criminal organizations from neighboring countries, take advantage of insufficient government presence in mining areas and porous borders with Colombia and Peru, to insert themselves into illegal mining supply chains in Ecuador.*

The involvement of organised criminal groups in illegal mining activities has amplified the dangers, with greatly increased incidences of violence, human rights abuses and human trafficking.

Silver ring being made held in craftsman's fingers

Our artisan craftsman.

Working with local Ecuadorian craftsman is vitally important to us. All of our pieces are made in the highlands of Ecuador by small owner-operated businesses. The skilled craftsman we work with create beautiful, unique jewelry pieces in their own workshops, usually working alongside their family members. Your purchase of a finely crafted piece of Oceana Jewelry supports small, family run businesses whom we pay directly for their work.

One of our goals for the future is to train local, Galápagos artists how to create and craft pieces, thereby further supporting our Galápagos economy.
